"Inferring changes in Himalayan snow and its contribution to water supply"
Global warming is expected to result in less precipitation falling as snow and faster snowmelt in the Himalayas, with serious repercussions for the water supply of farmland and cities in much of Asia. In part because of the sparseness of in situ observations, the role of Himalayan snow in downstream water systems has not been quantified, however. I will present preliminary work on using MODIS snow cover and models of snowmelt and water routing to estimate interannual variability in snow amount and melt timing and their correlation with temperature. Time permitting, I will also discuss some related research into global hydrological processes.
