DESCRIPTION:\n\nThe Earth Institute’s (CERC’s) Professional Development Progr
am in Environmental Sustainability provides three graduate credits in human
ecology coupled with curriculum development for the secondary school class
room. The Program is designed to support educators in increasing their unde
rstanding of the inquiry process and environmental sustainability in the ur
ban context that is New York City and then to translate that knowledge to t
heir teaching practice. Likewise\, the Program incorporates the current foc
us on STEM (science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics) and Literac
y education and 21st century skills acquisition for our City’s and nation’s
youth.\n\nNow in its eighth year\, the Program is comprised of a two week
period\, typically held in July.\n\nIn week one\, Earth Institute faculty a
nd researchers guide teachers as they work in teams to explore New York Cit
y marshes\, estuaries\, parks and neighborhoods using ecological field meth
ods.  Teams then develop mini-research projects\, gather and assess data\,
present their findings and reflections on the inquiry process through scien
tific posters.\n\nIn week two\, teachers contextual their field experience
through cases and designed to reveal the complexity of issues in environmen
tal sustainability.  The goal here is to demonstrate and experience the imp
ortance of both the natural and social sciences for understanding and addre
ssing that complexity.  Case studies have included the BP Oil Disaster and
Hydraulic Fracturing in New York State.\n\nAdditionally Week Two incorporat
es the design and development of curriculum units for use during the upcomi
ng academic year\, aligned to Common Core Standards\, effective technology
use and formative and summative assessment.   Teacher implementation and re
source plans complete the Program\n\nThe Earth Institute’s (CERC’s) Profess
ional Development Program in Environmental Sustainability encourages curren
tly practicing secondary educators from all disciplines to apply.   Likewis
e\, students currently enrolled in graduate or undergraduate schools of edu
cation or in graduate programs in sustainability science are encouraged to
attend.\n\nFor New York City and New York State teachers\, the three gradua
te credits fulfill the New York State Department of Education’s science tea
ching certification and can also be applied to a master’s degree or to the
“30 points above” requirement for a salary increase in New York City public
schools.\n\nFor more information on the Earth Institute visit www.earth.co
