III-nitride micro- and nano-photonics

III-nitride wide bandgap semiconductors have been at the center stage of the semiconductor research and development effort over the last decade. Photonic/electronic devices based on III-nitrides, including UV/blue/green/white LEDs, violet/blue laser diodes, UV detectors, and high power/temperature transistors, have been successfully realized. This talk will provide a brief overview on recent advances made by our group in the area of nitride material growth and micro- and nano-photonics. We will concentrate on topics of (a) material and device challenges of III-nitride deep UV photonics and (b) III-nitride micro-emitter technology. III-nitrides for emerging technologies of solid-state neutron detectors and energy generation and storage devices will also be discussed.

Jingyu Lin is the Linda F. Whitacre Endowed Chair & Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Co-Director of the Nanophotonics Center in the Whitacre College of Engineering at Texas Tech University. She has made pioneering contributions to the nano-scale epitaxial material growth and photonic device fabrication, fundamental understanding, and practical applications of III-nitride wide bandgap semiconductors. She has published over 300 scientific papers, written 10 book chapters and holds 20 patents. Her journal publications have generated over 5000 citations with an h-index of 41. She earned her bachelor's degree at State University of New York College at Oneonta and her Ph.D. from Syracuse University (N.Y.). She relocated to Texas Tech in 2008 from Kansas State University where she was a Professor of Physics.
