Nano and Interfacial Catalysis

The Nano and Interfacial Catalysis group, headed by Prof. Dr. Xinhe Bao, is devoted to fundamental research on the catalysis on nanocatalysts and interface chemistry, with the emphasis on the development and employment of appropriate methods and technologies in order to understand the nature of catalysis.

"Our efforts are directed to the controllable synthesis and dynamic characterization of novel porous materials and matrix, because we recognize that the nano-related effect plays a very important role in heterogeneous catalysis. We utilize nanotechnologies and in-situ analytical techniques to probe the geometric, electronic and spectroscopic properties, in particular, the dynamic variation and self-organization of the surface structures, and the reactivity of surfaces of working catalysts such as nanoparticles, single crystals, colloids and thin layers and simultaneous detection of catalytic performance. Thus we hope to bridge the existing "material gap" and "pressure gap" between surface science and real catalysis. By following this strategy we intend to establish a quantitative correlation between the structure and catalytic performance.

Therefore, the group is teamed up around Material synthesis, Structural characterization, Reaction, Surface and Interfacial Catalysis, Modeling and Simulation. The synthesis efforts in our group do not aim at the discovery of new materials but at the fabrication of a well-defined material with known functional properties. Theory designates the application of quantum chemical methods and molecular dynamics for the exploration of reaction mechanisms and reaction energy profiles. These four subgroups are working together revolving at the several frontier topicses, in particular, concerning energy and environment, such as the activation and conversion of methane."
