The Earth Institute, Collumbia College and the School of General Studies are pleased to present the final briefings for the Capstone Workshop in Sustainable Development (SDEV W3280). Come learn about the diverse client-based projects and research sustainable development students conducted abroad this semester.  Students will present their work with the following clients and projects:  NYC Department of Parks & Recreation; and Rockland County Legislature Environmental Committee.

Client: NYC Department of Parks & Recreation
The NYC Department has created a new program, “Natural Area Volunteers,” that recruits volunteers to engage in ecological conservation and restoration work in city parklands. Seeking to evaluate the program in recruiting, training, and providing a satisfactory experience for volunteers, the Department of Parks and Recreation is asking student teams to provide a report identifying program successes and improvements in these areas. This project will require a variety of investigations, including visits to parks throughout the five boroughs of New York City, interviews with staff and volunteers, assessment of program practices, and a demographic study of new communities for further recruitment.

Client: Rockland County Legislature Environmental Committee
The second project builds upon research conducted in the spring 2012 semester, and will have students working with the Rockland County Legislature Environmental Committee on a series of intensive case studies of jurisdictions that have already enacted water conservation ordinances.  The case studies will enable the committee to better understand the kinds of regulations that have been adopted in other jurisdictions, including the reasoning behind the ordinances, the operational and financial details of implementation, and the results achieved through ordinances.

Open to the public.

RSVP is required for this event.

Photo ID will be required to enter the Alumni Center.
