ABOUT THE FILM (10:00am - 12:30pm)
Extreme By Design examines the role Design Thinking can play in the lives of young people who want to
compete in the global economy and pursue careers in public service. It offers inspiration to the next
generation of social problem solvers. The documentary follows a group of Stanford University Business,
engineering, and medical students as they design innovative products and services to solve problems of
the world's poor as part of the Design for Extreme Affordability course.
A hands-on introduction to a creative process known as Design Thinking. The workshop is a fast-paced,
90-minute exercise that starts with a design challenge and covers five design steps (empathize, define,
ideate, prototype, test). At key intervals, we present short clips of the PBS documentary film, Extreme By
Design, that provides vivid, real-world examples of each step. The workshop’s format allows participants
to gain confidence in their own creativity (symbolized by a physical prototype they themselves make)
and to draw inspiration from the film’s characters who tackle an almost impossible assignment.
